What Is a Dental Emergency?

To put it simply, a dental emergency is any situation that requires prompt attention from a dental professional. Some accidents can’t wait or else the problem could escalate beyond repair, or it may become nearly impossible to eat. For occurrences such as these, our trained and dedicated staff will do everything in their power to ensure speedy treatment.

Examples of specific dental emergencies include:

• Knocked-out or extruded teeth

• Soft tissue damage to the tongue, cheeks, lips, or gums
• Cracked or fractured teeth
• Lost fillings or crowns

What to Do In the Meantime

We will gladly do everything in our power to see you as soon as possible, but what can you do while you’re waiting to come and see us? The best thing to do is to receive expert recommendations from us on how to handle your situation in the meantime, but you also can’t go wrong with some of these common at-home methods in relieving pain and mitigating damage:

• Constantly sanitize the mouth with a saltwater rinse
• Keep pressure on the bleeding area with gauze
• Apply a cold pack to the area in pain
• Avoid eating or drinking a few hours before your appointment if possible

Since many dental emergency services require surgery, it’s a good idea to ask around for a ride home in case you need to be sedated. If you had completely lost a tooth, filling, or crown, you should also try saving and cleaning it in case your dentist needs it during your procedure.
